I'd like to test this out, but my RiscPC is (hopefully just temporarily) dead. So today I had another thought - what's the latest Web browser I can run under Win 98 and would it beat NetSurf in terms of functionality, speed and web page compatibility? Quick web search suggests Opera browser releases up to around 2009 still support Win 98. None of the DOS MP3 players produced sound which the PC card software could interpret correctly, and WinAMP seemed about the best of the Win98 players I tried. After some effort I found that my 133MHz 586 card could just about return a reasonable rendition of some low bit rate, mono, MP3s using Win 98 compatible version of WinAMP.not ideal. Also, it has a lot of improvements, and bug fixes that (IMHO) improves both the user experience, and compatibility with modern Windows. It has Winamp 5.666 (or at least parts of it, as far as I understand) running under the hood, and better yet, it’s in active development. I found a variety of DOS and Windows MP3 players and tried them all with a selection of MP3s I had on the HDD. Well, IMHO, nowadays WACUP ( r/WACUP) is the best version of Winamp. So I experimented using the PC Card as an MP3 player. I'd really like to have a meaningful use for my PC card in the RiscPC, but haven't really found one yet.Ī few months back (when my RiscPC was working!) I thought I'd found it - use the PC card to play MP3s, rather than stressing my StrongArm, and so leaving that free to run RISC OS.
